As an ergonomist, you ensure the efficiency and safety of the equipment, design of the systems and transportation. You'll use scientific information to fortify the safeguard, comfort, and health of anyone using it. You are expected to promote health and productivity in the organizational environment.

An ergonomist’s job is to use their skills to improve human’s interaction with systems, equipment and processes by studying the relationship between environment, people and the hardware. You have to make sure that the machine is as safe and comfortable as possible to use for the people.

Common Duties/Routines

The ergonomist will investigate the physical and psychological capability and limitation of the human body. The job is to analyze how people use the equipment and machinery. You will have to manage the workplace risk evaluation and keep an eye on the work environment and their effect on the people using it. You will further have to identify the areas for improvement by using the estimation results and subsequently implement those improvements by designing a practical solution. It will be your ultimate responsibility to train colleagues and provide the required information and advice to them and the clients as well. In case of an industrial injury; as an ergonomist, you will have to act as an expert witness to cope up with the situation.

An ergonomist must create a user manual to make the best use of new products and systems. Maintaining reports of recommendations and findings along with compiling statistical data and writing proposals will also be a part of your job. You willhave to apply a research process on people by interviewing and observing them individually in a particular type of environment. For managing the research process, you will collaborate with the employees of all level at an organization. The ergonomist will have to maintain sections of projects and present them to clients and different conferences and professional associations.

It is vital to obtain a reasonable degree in an applicable subject such as biology, mathematics, design, psychology, physiotherapy, medicine, sports science, physiology, occupational therapy, operational research or physicsin order to become an Ergonomist. Some posts may require a postgraduate qualification.

Work Environment

As an Ergonomists, you have to suit yourself in comfortable yet illuminated offices and often studios. You may travel and visit various places to remodel the work environment or equipment. As anErgonomists, you must have effective communication skills in order todetermine precisely what type of problems the users are having with the equipment.

You will divide between working in an office and visiting clients and sites. Most of the work is computer-based, involving the use of design software and theCAD systems which are computer-aided design. You are supposed to use a variety of equipment to measure and make calculations.

However, each particular area has its specific added training requirements. The scope of on-duty reinforcement depends on the employers. You are advised to focus on taking responsibility for your advancement and development.
